Learning and Teaching Framework

St Patrick’s is a learning community where we work together to create an environment that encourages
us to play, explore, wonder, discover, dream, grow, question and learn. The learning at St Patrick’s builds
on the knowledge your child has attained to date and strives to improve and develop learning.

At the core of our learning and teaching we use:

• ‘Source of Life’, our Religious Education Curriculum.

• The Victorian Curriculum F-10 based on the Australian Curriculum and reflects Victorian Standards and priorities.
The Victorian Curriculum is used to plan student learning programs, assess student progress and report to parents
and is the curriculum for all Victorian Schools.

• Inquiry Based Learning.

The Curriculum is organised into the following learning areas and capabilities.

Religious Education

“Source of Life” proposes that Religious Education in its fullest sense belongs not only to the religious
education program but it encompasses everything in the curriculum. It is about human flourishing
in a deeply Christian understanding- whatever makes a student more wise, more loving,
more fully human is making the student reflect more fully the image of God.

As a school community we pray, celebrate, and learn together in what is a lifelong process of religious
and spiritual development.

St Patrick’s School assists parents to foster their child’s faith and development.
This is done through formal Religious Education lessons, liturgies and prayer.

Students and Parents are supported in their Sacramental preparation by the School and St Augustine’s Parish.

Discipline-Based Learning

Students learn the knowledge, skills and behaviours in the Arts, English, Humanities, Mathematics, Science and other languages.

English

The study of English is central to the learning and development of all young Australians.
The study of English assists students to read, write, speak, create and reflect on a wide range of texts
such as films, stories and images. It is important that students appreciate, enjoy and understand the English language.

At St Patrick’s Primary School students participate in a variety of formal public speaking opportunities such:

• Leading assembly

• Thanking guests

• Whole school presentation and assemblies

• Community competitions

Mathematics

The study of Mathematics provides students with essential skills and knowledge in Number and Algebra,
Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. It develops the numeracy capabilities that all students
need in their personal, work and civic life. The curriculum focuses on developing increasingly sophisticated
and refined mathematical understanding, fluency, logical reasoning, analytical thought and problem-solving.

Interdisciplinary Learning

Students explore different ways of thinking, solving problems and communicating.
They learn to use a range of technologies’ to plan, analyse, evaluate and present their work.
Students learn about creativity, design principles and processes.

Digital Technologies

St Patrick’s Primary School focuses on providing students with the tools to transform their learning
and to enrich their learning environment.

Knowledge, skills and behaviours enable students to:

• Develop new thinking and learning skills that produce creative and innovative insights.

• Develop more productive ways of working and solving problems individually and collaboratively.

• Create information products that demonstrate understanding.

• Express themselves in contemporary and socially relevant ways.

• Communicate locally and globally to solve problems and to share knowledge.

Students are explicitly taught to understand the implications of the use of digital technologies
and their social and ethical responsibilities as users of digital technologies, to ensure
they become responsible digital citizens.

Personal and Social Learning

Students learn about themselves and their place in society. They learn how to stay healthy and active.
Students develop skills in building social relationships and working with others. They take responsibility
for their learning, and learn about their rights and responsibilities as global citizens.
